Reconstructing Culture

2003

A video work that consists of two large video projections of two ceramic objects being smashed with hammers, one a bowl and the other a religious icon.

If one considers that ceramic objects have been used to trace the history of cultures back through time, then the work can be seen as an attempt to reconstruct culture, through the recovery of artefacts. It is significant that the videos last seconds, denoting that it takes seconds to destroy culture and understanding and once destroyed can never be fully recovered. The original objects are presented in front of the projections. The cracks and missing pieces work, as metaphors for our gaps in understanding and perception, once knowledge is lost it can never be fully recovered.
